I've always believed that taxpayers should pay for the services they actually receive, not for inflated projections of what a consultant thinks those services might cost years down the road. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I believe is happening with Cape Coral's proposed trash assessment. Instead of basing rates on actual costs, the City is forcing residents to pay today based largely on a consultant's prediction of what the next solid waste contract could cost in the future. I don't believe families should be forced to finance hypothetical expenses that haven't happened.
The documentation you're about to see explains why I believe this assessment is unnecessarily high and how a more responsible, fact-based approach to budgeting could save the average Cape Coral household approximately $100 per year. My job as your councilman is to protect taxpayers, question assumptions, and demand evidence before asking residents to pay more. Government shouldn't collect money because it might need it someday. It should justify every dollar it asks from the people who earned it.
